What is Leishmaniasis? More info here PDF1 PDF2 Leishmaniasis is a serious and often fatal disease of dogs, other animals and humans. How widespread is it? The disease is widespread in Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. In the United States, it appears most frequently in foxhounds and is not YET spread to humans here, although the Centers for Disease Control sees animal to human transmission as a potential threat and is investigating how the disease is spread What's being done to prevent the spread of Leishmaniasis? We still have time to act to prevent the spread of Leishmaniasis in the United States. The New England Hunts Association is cooperating with the American Kennel Club and Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in a research study on Leishmaniasis. The results of the research will help us understand the disease, how it is transmitted, and how to prevent it from spreading in the United States. As a member of the New England Hunts Association, the Piscataqua Hounds is proud to have be participating in this important research. Since every hound in our pack is certified free from Leishmaniasis, the pack serves as part of the control group for the study. |
